The origins of The Island

Porquerolles hides many secrets, and some of its origins are still vague,
like the origin of its name. Many civilizations have animated the island for centuries, and this is not about to stop.

A historic island

First of all, a small point on the spelling of this island. Many of you write “Porquerolle” or “Porquerol”, but it is spelled Porquerolles. There are several possible hypotheses as to the origin of the island’s name.

The first comes from the Latin Portus (port) and olla (pottery or, oulo in Provençal). This put together makes Port-des-Oules. This hypothesis is well-founded, since the remains of an amphora factory have been found on the island.

A national park

Thanks to its status as a national park, the island of Porquerolles is protected, and one can observe
and aquatic fauna as well as an extraordinary flora.
Despite the number of visitors, it has kept its natural charm and its wild side.

A protected island

The island of Porquerolles is since 2012, joined the national park of Port-Cros. This island of 7km long and 3km wide is the largest and most cultivated of the Golden Islands.

The island has undergone many occupations over the centuries. First, the Celts, then the Ligurians and the Phoceans. This rich past can still be seen today in the various monuments on the island, such as the fort Sainte Agathe or the Church Sainte Anne.

The national park is home to a truly impressive biodiversity. All the vegetation on the island gives off a fragrance that brings visitors every year.

In order to protect this biodiversity, you will find the Mediterranean National Botanical Conservatory on the island, thanks to which the status of each species can be recorded and verified, and thus avoid extinctions.

The island

Porquerolles, and the islands of Hyères in general, benefit from a typically Mediterranean climate with more than 300 sunny days per year.
It is thanks to this sun that the island can produce good wine, that the animals live happily and that the flora is flourishing and so rich.

Map of the island

You can find the map of the island at the Porquerolles tourist office, which is located at the boat’s exit, on the port. The pier is located in the orange zone, the eastern and western parts of the island are rather mountainous, and most of the beaches of Porquerolles are in the north. On the west side of the island is the Langoustier peninsula, where you can find Le Mas du Langoustier, a renowned gastronomic restaurant. A very small part of the island is inhabited by man, the rest is wild. On the island, there are many forts, as the islands of Porquerolles had a strategic place, and several defensive forts were built on the island.
