Traces of Roman settlements have been discovered in the Port Man cove and the Palud cove. The island of Port-Cros has therefore been inhabited since ancient Rome. Research has been carried out on the island, and graves, drains and a Roman coin have been found.
Populations then continued to make the island live, but suffered many attacks. The one that lasted for a long time was that of the barbarian pirates, who stayed from the 10th to the 16th century, and did a lot of damage to the island, but also terrorised the population. After many years, in 1921, the owners of the island oriented the island towards a reasonable development of tourism and so the construction of a hotel on the island began, as well as maritime connections.
Port-Cros is full of forts and buildings of all kinds. They are part of the extraordinary heritage of Port-Cros.

However, it was destroyed between the 10th and 16th centuries due to the barbarian pirates who sacked the island during this period. In 1531, when François Premier was visiting Hyères, he was informed of the presence of pirates on the coast.
He then drew up a plan and entrusted it to Bertrand d’Ornezan, who was responsible for building the fortifications. However, in 1617, the forts had still not been built.
The constructions were carried out under Richelieu, who built many forts on the islands of Hyères, and it was at this time that the forts of Estissac and Port Man on the island of Port-Cros were built.
