The history of the island

Where does the name Port-Cros? How is it time inhabited? What civilizations have taken up residence over the centuries? Discover the answers!

Traces of Roman settlements have been discovered in the bay of Port Man and the cove of La Palud. The island of Port-Cros is inhabited since ancient Rome. Research has been done on the island, and was able to find the graves, pipelines and a Roman coin.

Populations then continued to live on the island, but suffered many attacks. One that lasted a long time was that of the Barbary pirates, who remained of the tenth and sixteenth century, and were a lot of damage on the island, but also terrorized the population. After many years, in 1921, orientèrent Island owners the island to a reasonable development of tourism and thus the construction of a hotel on the island began, as well as sea links.

The buildings of the island

Discover the Island of buildings and the reasons and conditions of their buildings. You can then understand the evolution of the island of Hyeres and the evolution of its population.

However it was destroyed between the tenth and sixteenth century because of Barbary pirates who plundered the island during this period. In 1531, while François Premier was visiting Hyeres, he was informed of the presence of pirates on the coast.

He put a plan in place, and entrusted it to Ornezan Bertrand, who was in charge of building fortifications. However, in 1617, the forts were still not built.

The constructions were carried out under Richelieu, who built many forts on the islands of Hyères, and it is at that time that were built forts of Estissac, Port Man on the island of Port-Cros.
