The origins of the island

Porquerolles hides many secrets, and some of its origins are still vague, as the origin of its name.
Many civilizations have animated the island for centuries, and it is not about to stop.

Porquerolles, les origines de l'îles

A historic island

First, a small dot on the spelling of this island. Many of you write "Porquerolles", however it is written Porquerolles. Several hypotheses are possible as to the origin of the name of the island.

The first comes from the Latin Portus (harbor) and olla (pottery, Oulo in Provençal). Which put end to end is Port-des-Oules. This hypothesis is indeed justified, since been found amphorae factory remains on the island.

Another of these assumptions is as follows, Port Quairolles or Quiérolles that comes from the Celtic, meaning Quair rock. His name would be Port des Rochers.

On the island, we find the remains of a Greek village of sinners, but also a factory of Roman amphora showing that the island is inhabited since ancient times.

Porquerolles Island is an incredibly rich history that has seen many civilizations evolve.

A national park

With its national park status, the island of Porquerolles is protected,
and we can observe a fish and wildlife and an extraordinary flora.
Despite the number of visitors, it has retained its natural charm and its wild side.

The national park is home to a truly impressive biodiversity. The whole island of vegetation allows it to release a scent that every year brings in visitors.

To protect this biodiversity, you will find the National Mediterranean botanical conservatory on the island, through which one can identify and check the status of each species, and avoid extinctions.
